5 awesome local bookstores your kids should visit
One of my favorite things to do with the kids is visit local bookstores.
A good bookstore will keep all five of us – the kids AND me – entertained for hours. Of course, many of them offer storytimes or special events, but a bookstore with a great kids’ section doesn’t even need those things to keep us in there, getting comfy with a nice pile of books to read on-site and later when we get home. And one of my favorite things about local bookstores is that they can help with more specialized reading for the area, or offer up ideas based on what’s going on in the community. For example, The Bookies has pulled an array of books about Alexander Hamilton and the time he lived since Denver is currently a little Hamilton-crazy. Love it!
Here are five of our favorite local bookstores in Denver and the surrounding areas:
1.) Second Star to the Right
4353 Tennyson St., Denver 80212
2.) Tattered Cover
Denver, LoDo, Union Station, and Aspen Grove
3.) Hearthfire Books and Treats
1254 Bergen Parkway (Bergen Village Shopping Center)
We stumbled on this bookstore while at the Evergreen Farmer’s Market a few years ago, and I have to admit the big draw for my kids was that they also serve frozen yogurt. However, along with the treats (and coffee for you! Yes!), they have a variety of kids’ books and toys. The bookstore makes a fun stop while exploring Evergreen, and is a great place to pick up a book for quiet time after you’ve been out hiking or running around.
4.) The Bookies Bookstore
4315 E. Mississippi Ave, Denver 80246
303-759-1117Along with pulling books based on what’s going on locally (like Hamilton!), this bookstore has a wide array of children’s and young adult books, along with suggested summer reading lists for every age. They also host storytime every Tuesday, AND you get 15% off if you pay by check or cash in-store so come prepared!
4280 Tennyson Street, Denver 80212
Just up the street from Second Star, the BookBar has drinks and a cafe, along with a selection of books for the kids to read while you sip your wine (yasssss!). They also have storytime Tuesdays and Thursdays, along with happy hour at the same time – bring the kids for a story and get 1/2 off all kids meals and wines.
Do you have a favorite bookstore that I missed? I’d love to hear about it!
